Timeline and story of each Maruti Suzuki Cars -Part 1



Maruti Suzuki India Limited, formerly known as Maruti Udyog Limited, a subsidiary company of Japanese automaker Suzuki. The company was founded in and was part of the Government of India, and from 1981 to 2003. It was purchased by the Suzuki Motor Corporation of the Government of India in 2003. As of June 2021 Maruti Suzuki hold 48% market share of Indian passenger car market.

Maruti 800

Maruti 800 was the first product of Maruti Suzuki in India, launched back in 1983. It was based on Suzuki's first generation alto and powered by a 800cc engine. After launch, It gain popularity among middle class peoples who want a low maintained, reliable and also low budget. But due to BSIV emission norms Maruti Suzuki decided discontinued in 2014. During this period, 2.66 million 800s sold in India. With over 31 years of production, Maruti Suzuki 800 remains the second longest production car in India  


Maruti Omni

After the success of Maruti 800, Maruti launched Omni which launched back in 1984.  It was powered by 796cc engine. It gain popularity among people who want a spacious car. It was discontinued in 2019 because of all new safety norms. It was widely used as ambulance and also as a cargo van.

Maruti Gypsy

Maruti Gypsy was a four wheel drive vehicle. Generally It is an off-road vehicle, or a vehicle for rough roads. It was introduced in the Indian market in December 1985 with the 970 cc engine.  Maruti Gypsy served in Indian Armed forces. It was discontinued in 2018 due to safety norms.


Maruti 1000/ Esteem

The Maruti 1000, made by Maruti is a sedan, introduced in India October 1990. In 1990 when it was launched, It was overpriced and out of reach from car buyer at that time. It was powered by 970cc engine.

In 1994, Maruti 1000 had a facelift and renamed as "Esteem". Also get  a powerful 1.3Liter engine. It was placed under the Maruti 1000.

Due to low sales Maruti 1000 discontinued in 2000 but esteem sitll in production. Maruti esteem received a facelift in 2004 and replaced by Swift Dzire in 2007.


Maruti Zen

Maruti Zen is a 5 door hatchback, launched back in 1993. The full form of word "ZEN" is Zero Engine Noise. It was powered by !.0Liter engine.

The Zen gain popularity with the Indian Racing Scene with highly modified versions of the 993 cc G10B engine generating 100+ Bhp.

Zen was the first enthusiast  hatchback in India. It attracted many young stars of that time who want a fun to drive car. It was discontinued in 2006.

Maruti Baleno

Maruti Suzuki Baleno was launched back in 1999. It was a sedan segment car. Maruti Baleno was also popular as a rally car.  It was discontinued in 2006.



But in Geneva Motor show Suzuki introduced a "Baleno" named hatchback in 2015. It was launched in India 2015. It placed just above the Swift and gain popularity among most people who want a reliable fuel efficient  premium hatchback.

Maruti Baleno also had a Performance oriented version. It was powered by !.0Litre 3 cylinder boosterjet engine which produced 100hp. It was named as "Baleno RS". But due to low sales and BSVI emission norms, Baleno RS discontinued in 2020.


Maruti Wagon R



Maruti Wagon R introduced in India in 1999. After its launched Wagon R gain its popularity between people who want reliable, specious entry level car. As of 31 December, 2019  Wagon R sold over 2.4 million units in India.

It was powered by 1.1L engine. First generation Wagon R received a minor facelift in 2003.

Second Generation Wagon R launched back in 2010. It was powered by all new K10B 1.0Litre engine. Maruti Stingray is a new version of Wagon R with new Front grille, bumper and headlamp setup and also available in VXI trim. Maruti Stingray introduced in 2014.

Second Generation Wagon R  received a minor facelift in 2013 with restyled bumper and grille.

Third Generation Wagon R Launched in 2019. Third Generation Wagon R shared its HEARTECT platform with Ignis, Baleno and swift. Third Generation Wagon R received a major exterior and interior changes.

It also Powered by two engine option. There are 1.0Litre K10B and 1.2Lire K12M.  

Maruti Alto



Maruti Alto is a entry level budget segment hatchback. Alto was launched back in 2000. First generation Indian Alto based on Fifth Generation Japanese Alto. After its launched, Alto became the best seller in India for its low maintained and reliability. Alto powered by 800cc engine. In 2008, Alto achieve the 1 million sales mark and became the third Maruti car after Maruti 800 and Maruti Omni. First Generation Indian Alto discontinued in 2012.

Second generation Alto launched in 2012. It has major interior and exterior changes. It also powered by 800cc engine. 

It also have a 1.0Litre version which named as Alto K10. It was launched back in 2014 with multiple interior and exterior changes but mechanically remain same. Maruti Alto K10 received a facelift. The Alto k10 discontinued in 2020 and replaced by Spresso.

However 800cc variants remained in production and Maruti Also give time to time facelift to Alto.


Maruti Versa/Maruti Eeco

Maruti Versa launched in 2001 in India which based on Suzuki Every Plus. It is the second van launched by Maruti after Omni.

It has 8 seater and 5 seater version. It was powered by 1.3Litre 4 cylinder engine. due to low demand Versa discontinued in 2010.


Maruti Eeco introduced in 2010. It is the refreshed and affordable version of Versa. It is powered by 1196cc 4 cylinder engine. It also had 7 or 5 seater version. 


Maruti Swift



Maruti Swift introduced in 2005 in India with 1.3Litre petrol engine. in 2007, Maruti added 1.3L DDIS engine but due to BSIV emission norms  1.3L DDIS replaced by 1.2L K-series engine.

Second Generation Swift introduced in India in 2012 with a new exterior and interior. It was powered by 1.2Litre K12 series and 1.3L DDIS engine. It received a minor facelift in 2014 with some cosmetic and mechanical changes.

Third generation Swift launched in 2017 in India. 3rd gen Swift share its Heartect platform with Baleno and Ignis. It is powered by 1.2Litre K12M engine. also received a major Interior and exterior changes. It also minor facelift in 2020. but facelifted swift launched in India in 2021.   


Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara

In 2007, Maruti Suzuki launched Grand Vitara in India which is a third generation of Suzuki Grand Vitara. It was powered by 2.4Litre engine. Due to importing, It was overpriced and reached out from many people.

Due to low sales and demand Maruti discontinued in 2014.


Maruti Zen Estilo

Maruti Zen Estilo launched in India in 2006. It has a tallboy design like Wagon R and it was powered by 1.1Litre engine.

In 2009, It received a facelift and also renamed as "Estilo". Facelifted Estilo received a improve engine and styling. It was Powered by 1.0Litre K10b engine. But due to low sales Estilo discontinued in 2014 and replaced by Maruti Celerio.
